Our Origins
Legacy of Canada House

Originally constructed in 1893 by the respected architects Ellis & Wilson, this iconic building was first home to the North of Scotland Canadian Mortgage Company. Known locally as Canada House, its Renaissance Revival architecture and granite structure have been a part of Aberdeen’s landscape for well over a century.

For many years, it served as a Bank of Scotland branch, a place where generations of Aberdonians handled their daily banking. However, as the world shifted towards digital banking brought on during the COVID-19 pandemic, the branch closed its doors in 2022. This historic gem has been left silent and unoccupied for the last 3 years.

Our Story

When we first walked through its doors, we saw more than just an empty building. We saw an opportunity to breathe new life into a piece of Aberdeen’s history. We imagined a place where the grandeur of the past could be experienced alongside the comfort and elegance of modern dining. And so, Glenhouse Aberdeen was born. We worked carefully to preserve its architectural beauty, restoring the original bank vaults and transforming them into private dining rooms and a whisky lounge.

Throughout the space, we’ve kept details that honor its legacy, including the Canada House nameplate above the entrance, as a nod to its origins and a reminder of its story.

For us, Glenhouse is more than just a bar and restaurant. It is a celebration of Aberdeen’s heritage, brought back to life for the community to enjoy. Step inside and become part of its next chapter, where history, elegance and hospitality meet in the heart of Union Street.
